Diamondback terrapins are the only brackish water turtle species in the United States. They rely on shoreline habitats for nesting, foraging, and the development of their hatchlings. Diamondbacks face numerous threats; habitat loss from land development and mortality from crabbing gear, both commercial and recreational, are major contributors to the decline in Diamondback populations. Luckily, many jurisdictions in the Chesapeake Bay are working to conserve their natural habitats and require the installation of bycatch reduction devices on crab pots to reduce this threat.
